David B. N. Lee, M.D., is a graduate of the medical program of the University of Hong Kong. He began his nephrology training at the Centre for Nephrology, Royal Free Medical School, and the Hammersmith Hospital, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, both in London, England. Thereafter, he moved to UCLA, where he completed his nephrology fellowship and successively held the positions of the Director of the Dialysis Program and the Director of the Renal Transplant Program, all at the UCLA Medical Center. From 1981 to 2005, he served as the Chief of the Nephrology Program at the UCLA-San Fernando Valley Program. He then continued as a nephrology consultant at the Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles (VAGLA) Healthcare System. He retired in September 2011 and has since served as a part-time (WOC) consultant in nephrology.
Lee has been a faculty member of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA since 1971. Following his retirement, he has continued as a Professor Emeritus of Medicine. Currently he devotes most of this time to the design and development of a peritoneal-based, automated wearable artificial kidney (AWAK). His other research interest focuses on the epithelial junction complex, which links individual cells into tissues and organs.
